If you’re considering starting a blog or looking to level up your content, you might be wondering which blogging platform is best. I’ll review three popular blogging platforms from the perspective of a full-time copywriter who specialize in SEO and content marketing. After tracking my clients’ Google rankings and other success metrics, I’ve seen some clear trends that put some platforms ahead of the rest.

Finding the Best Blogging Platform for You

Let’s get this out of the way first: There’s no clear cut answer to which blogging platform is best. It depends on your needs. If you’re a casual blogger, you might have very different requirements than someone in a service-based industry or someone selling products. Each platform has its own quirks and learning curves.

A few factors that you want to take into account when choosing a blogging platform include:

  • Design
  • User experience
  • Selling capabilities
  • Cost
  • Social media and email marketing integration
  • SEO

Since SEO-driven copywriting is my specialty, I’ll primarily review platforms through that lens. If you’re interested in the design aspects of Showit and Squarespace, Inkpot Creative does a helpful comparison from a web designer’s perspective.

3 Popular Blogging Platforms Compared

There are so many blogging platforms available. I chose to compare these Squarespace, Wix, and Showit because they’re the most popular among our blogging clients, who are creative entrepreneurs. Like I said, which blogging platform is best for you depends on your needs, but there are some clear frontrunners when it comes to key features like SEO.

Squarespace

Pros

Squarespace is known for being relatively inexpensive and easy to use for lay people (a.k.a. folks who aren’t pro web designers). When you’re working on a shoestring budget, that can hold some appeal. You can take care of SEO basics, including customizing your slug and adding alt text to your images. For many small businesses, it’s a good starting point as long as you feel comfortable optimizing your copy with little guidance.

Cons

Every Squarespace site has to be built on one of their templates. That might be ok if you find that the ease of use is worth the trade off. If you want your site to look truly unique, though, Squarespace might not be the blogging platform for you.

Wix

Pros

The biggest perk of Wix is that it’s low cost to start a website. They offer free web hosting and templates. This appeals to a lot of creative entrepreneurs who are still figuring things out early in their business.

Cons

Even though Wix is relatively easy to use, the blog design isn’t very customizable. It’s possible to optimize your blog posts to some extent, but Wix SEO is the most convoluted of the three blogging platforms reviewed here. Just adding alt text to images can be a bit of a headache compared to Squarespace and Showit.

Showit

Pros

If you’re big on design, Showit gives you the most flexibility for creating a one-of-a-kind website. Showit is hands down the best blogging platform for SEO too. Showit websites host blogs on WordPress. This platform allows you a lot of control over on-page SEO. For blogging, the Yoast SEO plug-in analyzes your posts and creates SEO checklists. You can get the most SEO juice out of your blog posts without a lot of background knowledge.

Cons

There’s a learning curve with Showit. If you’re DIYing the design, give yourself plenty of time to get comfortable with it. The blogging on WordPress is pretty straightforward and user friendly in comparison. Showit is more expensive than many other blogging platforms. Again you have to decide what makes the most sense for your business.
